Aboriginal flag to be permanently flown at Longford

From Wednesday 11 November 2020, the Aboriginal flag will be permanently flown outside the Council Chambers in Longford. Earlier in the year, Northern Midlands Council commenced the installation of a third flagpole to fly the aboriginal flag on a permanent basis, alongside the Australian and Tasmanian flags.

“We have been working with Reconciliation Tasmania to improve and increase our cultural awareness and I am very proud to see this happen during my term as Mayor. It is a very important moment for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, and also a very valuable moment for our Council and the Northern Midlands community.” said Mayor Knowles.

“This week is an important week for our Aboriginal community, and we will continue to seek opportunities to acknowledge and respect their history and culture. We are looking forward to getting more involved and working further with Reconciliation Tasmania” said Mayor Knowles.

NAIDOC week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The week is a great opportunity to participate in activities and events to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. NAIDOC week is an opportunity for all Australians to join in on their celebrations.
